A step-by-step method for trimming your beard

Struggled to grow your beard

You may have struggled to grow your beard at first. But now your facial hair is at a length that you’re happy with.

However, you’re looking a little bit scruffy. You can see split ends forming and parts of your beard are longer than others.

It’s obvious it needs trimming. But you’re worried about doing it yourself. What if you cut too much off? You might have to shave and start again.

It doesn’t have to be this way. This blog post will take you through the easy process for trimming your beard.

Use Trimmer or scissors?

Trimmer or scissors?

Before you do anything else, you have an important decision to make. Are you going to use a trimmer or scissors to trim your beard?

Both have their advantages. Generally, if you’re looking to trim a lot off your beard, a trimmer is the way to go. You must be more cautious with this method though as it’s easy to take too much off!

Scissors give you more control and are great for quick tidy ups. There is less chance of anything going wrong and it’s easier to correct any mistakes you might make.

Whatever you choose, we’re going to show you how to trim your beard.

Using a trimmer

Make sure you do your research when buying a beard trimmer. Familiarising yourself with the different length settings will ensure you trim the right amount off.

To trim your beard using a trimmer:

  1. Before you do anything else, make sure your trimmer is fully charged. The last thing you want is for it to run out halfway through. Not a good look!

  2. Start with the longest setting on your trimmer. Begin shaving up against the grain, ensuring that you trim all of the hairs. If you go too short, too soon you may end up regretting your decision and there isn’t much that you can do about it at this point!

  3. If you’re happy with the length, then simply take off the guard and trim way any stray hairs.

  4. If you want it to be shorter, try the next length and then repeat number one until you’re happy with the result.

Using scissors

We shouldn’t have to tell you this, but don’t use the scissors from your kitchen drawer to trim your beard.

Instead, you should use specialist beard scissors which are smaller and easier to use than the regular kind.

To trim your beard using scissors:

  1. First brush your hair in a downwards direction. You should notice that longer hairs should start to stick out after you have done this.

  2. Now trim away any stray hairs. Continue to do this, being careful to follow your jawline to achieve a smart, curved look.

  3. Do the same on the other side.

  4. Finish up by trimming away any lose hairs on the bottom of your beard. If you’re like me, this may involve trimming a bit more as the hair tends to grow much quicker there than it does on the sides.

So, there you have it. Once you’ve trimmed your beard, remember to use beard oil and softener to keep it looking its best.
